3100 St. Pölten | Old Cemetery | Pernerstorferstraße | Dr. Hans Morgenstern Square
The 1,868 m² protected historical cemetery was established in 1859. In 1860, a ceremonial hall was constructed. The cemetery is one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in Lower Austria, and approximately 583 burials took place there until its closure. Unfortunately, due to the destruction of the tombstones by the Nazis, no gravestones remain. Only a memorial stone in the center of the cemetery served as a reminder of those buried there until recently. From 1906, burials took place at the newly established cemetery on Karlstettner Straße 6.
Thanks to the initiative of the City of St. Pölten, Mr. Mag. Thomas Pulle | Head of the City Museum | and historians Christoph Lind and Georg Traska, artist Anna Artaker was commissioned through a competition to create an artistic installation that makes the people buried there visible on 116 glass panels. The memorial installation was opened in September 2024.
In October 2024, a maintenance agreement was concluded between the City of St. Pölten | Mayor Mag. Matthias Stadler | and the Jewish Community of Vienna for ongoing maintenance work at the cemetery.
The cemetery is locked. Interested visitors are kindly asked to contact the St. Pölten City Museum | https://www.stadtmuseum-stp.at.
